The 2016 Summer Olympics, Games of the XXXI Olympiad, was decided on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; becoming the first ever city to host the Olympics in South America!The bidding process for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games was officially launched on 16 May 2007. Four candidate cities were chosen for the shortlist on 4 June 2008: Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo (which hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics).
The final voting was held on October 2, 2009, in Copenhagen with Chicago and Rio de Janeiro perceived as favorites to land the games. Chicago was surprisingly eliminated after the 1st round of voting. In the 2nd round Tokyo was eliminated, while Rio de Janeiro took a significant lead over Madrid heading into the final round. The lead held and Rio de Janeiro was announced as host.

The 2016 Summer Olympic program is scheduled to feature 26 sports. Baseball and softball, which were dropped from the program in 2005, karate, squash, golf, roller sports (inline speed skating) and rugby union all applied to be included, whether we will see them in the games is unknown as of now. It is also estimated that 205 nations and 12500 athletes will be participating the 2016 Olympics.

They say that it is extremely difficult to get tickets to any of the events at the Winter Games in Whistler, so I wonder, in a city like Rio, who will be able to afford the tickets?
